How to choose your perfect vibrator

By Rebecca, 11.06.2018

If you’ve ever walked in to a sex toy shop or started browsing through one online – then you know that there are more options than you ever thought could be possible. The bad news is that you can’t buy them all. The good news is that we can help you figure out where to start!

You don’t need to spend a fortune on your first few vibrators. We suggest started small, figuring out what you like, and then going for the more luxurious brands. Below are a few things to think about when making your first purchase.

1. Safe Material

Unfortunately not all sex toy material is safe for your body to be in contact with. You would think that this would be regulated, but it is not. Research what materials are safe for use (100% silicone, metal, glass, stone, wood with proper finishing and ABS plastic). Safe sex toys are made from non-porous materials, because there are no pores for bacteria to get stuck in. Always make sure that the sex toys that are inserted into any orifice of the body do not contain phlalates.

2. Internal or External or Anal Safe

Decide what type of vibrator you are looking for. You can get ones that are just intended to stimulate the external clitoris (like bullet vibrators or wands). You can get ones that are intended to stimulate inside the vagina (like g-spot or a-spot curves). There are, of course, vibrators that do both – these are commonly referred to as “rabbit” vibrators. If you’re intending to use your vibrator anally, make sure that it is anal-safe. This means that there is a large flared base so that it is impossible for it to get sucked into the rectum. While it is not possible for toys to get “lost” in the vagina, it is possible for them to disappear into the rectum. A flared base will prevent that from happening.

If you’re not sure whether you want an internal or external vibrator, it is probably better to get two different kinds than to get a rabbit-style vibrator. Rabbit vibrators don’t work for every body because every body is different. By buying two separate vibrators, you can play around with what works for you. There are so many different types of orgasms and orgasm combinations, that there is no wrong answer about what kind of (or how many) vibrators you want to use.

3. Solo or Couple or Both

Most vibrators are capable of being used solo or with a partner, however there are some vibrators that are geared towards one or the other. For example, the rabbit-style vibrator tends to be geared towards solo use, while toys like the We-Vibe Sync are geared towards being used with a partner. Of course, all of these can be used alone or with a partner but you might prefer to purchase one geared towards your main type of masturbation. Most vibrators are able to be used in most scenarios, so don’t stress out too much about this.

4. Waterproof

If you’re planning on using the vibrator in the bath or the shower, then you will need to get a waterproof vibrator. These tend to be rechargeable and therefore more expensive, but there are budget-friendly options available, and there are waterproof sex toys that require batteries. Always read the instructions to find out if it is water-resistant or waterproof before you get it soaking wet. This is also important information for when you clean your vibrator.

5. Batteries or Rechargeable or Plug-In

Plug-in vibrators tend to provide the strongest vibrations because it is directly plugged into a power source – these are often wand vibrators that are intended for external use.

Rechargeable vibrators can still be very powerful, and have the added bonus of not needing to purchase new batteries or worrying about the batteries unexpectedly running out. They often have a warning light when you need to recharge it.

Battery-operated vibrators tend to be the more budget-friendly options, and there are plenty of really great battery-operated vibrators. The vibrations tend to be more “buzzy” than “rumbly” or “smooth” like with a rechargeable vibrator – but it all depends on what your body likes.

6. App Compatible

There are app compatible vibrators on the market, which are pretty neat. You can create your own vibration patterns or you can have a partner control the vibrator from a long-distance location. You can also have strangers on the internet control the vibrator if that’s something you’re into. These tend to be more expensive, but can be worth it if you’re in a long-distance relationship.

7. Quietness

If a quiet vibrator is required, there are many sex toy blogs out there that rank the level of noise each vibrator creates. All vibrators make some kind of noise, so be prepared for that – but the noise levels can really vary. Don’t get stuck with a super loud one if you have roommates – do a bit of research first. If you’re buying it in person, you can ask to turn one on. It won’t be the same as if you’re in your quiet house, but you’ll get a better sense of the vibrations.

8. Small or Large

If you’re new to sex toys and you’re not sure where to start – then start on the smaller end. Start around 1 inch in diameter or less and work your way up. Every body is different, and every body enjoys different things, but it is better to go too small at first than to go too large and not be able to use it.

Try to use your new vibrator a few times to get the hang of it. New sensations take some getting used to so don’t rule it out right away.

One extra tip? Watch videos with sex toys. You might get inspired!

If you purchase a vibrator that isn’t quite what you want – think about why it doesn’t work for you. Is it too short? Too thick? Not strong enough? Too strong? If at first you don’t succeed… try again!

Enjoy and have fun!
