10 Natural Ways to Boost Your Libido

By Emmeline Peaches, 06.05.2021

In an ideal world everyone would have a similar libido (or ‘sex drive’) as their partner/s and all involved would be happy. However, this is not an ideal world and, in reality, sometimes people’s libido will differ.

A different libido from your partner/s is nothing to be ashamed of or worried about. In fact, it’s completely normal for people to vary in their level of sexual desire. That being said, if you feel like your libido is a problem then it is one.

If a libido mismatch is getting you and your partner/s down then you might be wondering if there are any ways you can address your current lack of desire.

Thankfully there is and – good news – it doesn’t require any drastic intervention.

Here are 10 ways that you can boost your libido naturally.

1. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is important for many different reasons. It’s the brain’s time to file away all the information from the day, it impacts our ability to think, it helps regulate mood, and (of course) it replenishes our energy.

A lack of sleep will leave you drained, mentally low, and unable to think of much beyond a nap.

Make sure that you invest in a healthy sleeping pattern to give your body and mind the right tools to apply some of its energy towards amorous actions.

2. Eat for Sex-cess

Believe it or not, certain foods really are good for boosting your libido, whereas some are best avoided. Foods such as chocolate and oysters contain magnesium, which is a natural booster for sex. Meanwhile fruits and vegetables contain many different nutrients and anti-oxidants which help get the blood flowing and increase energy levels. Food can not only boost your libido but also lead to stronger orgasms and longer sex sessions.

Some foods are best avoided, though. Anything high in sugar, fat, or salt is likely to leave you heavy, lethargic, and all over the place in terms of energy. Stick to wholefoods for the healthiest diet overall.

3. Limit Your Alcohol Intake

Excess alcohol has been linked to erectile dysfunction and the inability to reach a climax, which is definitely going to have a negative mental health impact which can lower your confidence and libido over time. If you want to boost your libido then it’s best to stick to a single drink per sitting and follow guidelines on the total units per week. Remember: There is no healthy alcohol intake, just less risky intake levels.

4. Keep In Touch

No, we’re not talking about phone calls here.

Hug more, hold hands, stroke each other. Touch releases feel good chemicals such as oxytocin and endorphins which our body associates with romance and desire. By increasing the amount of contact you have with your partner/s, your level of desire will increase too and you soon won’t be able to keep your hands off each other.

5. Work Out

A healthy cardiovascular system is a horny cardiovascular system.

Regular exercise helps increase the blood flow in the body, increases energy levels, reduces body fat, and increases confidence – all things that are sure to have an impact on your libido.

Just make sure you don’t overdo it, else you won’t have any fuel left in the tank for the post-workout session.

6. Get Invested in Erotica

The more that we engage with something, the more it sticks in our mind, and desire is no different.

Read erotica, watch porn, lose yourself in romantic stories and movies. By making an active effort to bring erotic content into your life you’ll begin to rewrite your neurochemistry so that it, too, begins to feel more sexual desire. Consider it brain training for the bedroom.

7. Take Your Vitamins

If you’re really struggling then it could also be that you’re lacking in vital vitamins and minerals. Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin D – all of these are important for your love life. Taking a multivitamin will help address any imbalances you have which, alongside a healthy diet, should begin to rise your libido in a more natural way.

8. Quit Smoking

Much like alcohol, smoking is associated with erectile dysfunction and an inability to orgasm…as well as being the leading cause for lung cancer and a real killer for that ever-important cardiovascular health.

Do yourself a favour and throw you cigarettes away. You may find that this one change alone is enough to bring your desires flooding back.

9. Work on Wellbeing

It’s hard to feel sexy when you don’t feel good about yourself. Self-confidence and mental health & wellbeing are crucial to having a good libido. If you’re struggling with yours then it might be worth investing in some self-help books, trying a mindfulness practice, meditating, or doing some CBT to address your wellbeing. Once you feel more desirable you’ll also begin feeling more desire – the two come hand-in-hand.

10. Remove the Pressure

If you’ve been struggling with libido for a while then, chances are, you’ve probably built up some performance anxiety. Stop being so hard on yourself!

Like we said, differences in libido are as natural as the remedies in this article, so make sure that you’re not putting undue pressure on yourself.

One good way to do this is to focus more on foreplay and less on climaxing. This will allow you to drop the performance anxiety and have the space to rebuild your sexual confidence with your partner/s.

None of these methods are a quick fix to boosting your libido, but nothing worth doing should be rushed. Don’t just trust the process, enjoy it. You never know just what you’ll discover along the way.
