Sexy Lingerie: Dressing to Impress

By Emmeline Peaches, 20.05.2021

Travel back to the Eighteenth century and whale bone corsets were a painful part of everyday living for affluent women hoping to maintain their social decorum (if not their ability to breathe). Lingerie used to be a practical element of women’s clothing however, even in the times of the toilette women would spent a little longer lingering on their undergarments – feeling the allure of the fabric underneath fabric and its potential to excite those who viewed it.

The Nineteenth century saw lingerie become much more of a sexual item and, since then, lingerie has seen many different evolutions – breaking sexual barriers and gender barriers as it became something that both genders could flaunt with erotic enjoyment.

Nowadays most women tend to have at least a few undergarments that they would term as ‘lingerie’ and men have some items that they might embrace in the same way. Wearing lingerie is sexy, empowering, and a strong statement of one’s intent. Picking lingerie, on the other hand, can be stressful, uncertain, and an all-around daunting prospect.

How does one dress to impress? Here are a few tips that we can offer you.

Pick a Style

Conventionally there are two different categories of lingerie – hard and soft. Hard lingerie includes items such as corsets, padded/wired bras, and bustles. Soft lingerie includes slips, panties, nightgowns, and unstructured bras. The two styles may have the same intention but their fit and look are radically different to each other.

It’s important when picking your lingerie to consider which type you prefer and which is more comfortable to you.

Hard lingerie will offer more form to your body. It can potentially alter certain aspects (padded bras, anyone?) or enhance curvature (we’re looking at you, corsets). It can, however, be a tad more restrictive or feel a bit claustrophobic if you’re not used to clothing that actively seeks to define your shape.

Soft lingerie is free form, flowing, and light. It offers additional movement and can add a sense of liberation. That being said, some people can struggle with the lack of support that it provides.

It’s up to you to decide which style you appreciate most and there’s nothing to say that you can’t mix and match a little bit too, but deciding on your primary style will greatly help you decide where to start when picking your perfect outfit.

Know Your Body

Lingerie is all about framing and complimenting your natural form and this is something that you should consider when shopping for your selection.

Every single body on this planet has some amazing features and you can bet that there is lingerie that will help to highlight those features and work with them to bring that added sex appeal to the table.

Equally, some lingerie simply doesn’t look great on some bodies – it is poor fitting and does the body an injustice.

Don’t be afraid to try lingerie on to see which types complement you and which should be discarded without a second thought.

Remember – unflattering lingerie is never about your body, it’s all about the garment and how well it works to showcase your sexy self.

Consider Colour

Just as different styles will vary in look on a person’s body so, too, will different colours. Those with warm skin tones might suit an olive colour or a deep red, whereas those with a cool skin tone might be better off with blue, lavender, or rose. And, of course, we all have colours that just uniquely suit us better.

Your usual wardrobe will likely already give you and idea of what colours suit you best. You can either stick to similar colours in your lingerie or you can choose to pick a stronger, more striking version of tones that you know suit your palette.

Whatever decision you make, we stand by our advice that you can always try before you buy (even if you just hold up an item against your body). Knowing what tones work best for you will really help your lingerie stand out.

And, finally…

Dress to Impress (Yourself)

Real talk – there’s nothing sexier than someone who knows they are sexy and owns it.

Confidence is an irreplaceable asset and the best way to look sexy is to feel sexy

With that in mind, whatever choice you make with lingerie make sure that you’re picking clothing that makes you feel like you love yourself.

If you truly feel attractive then that sexual confidence will shine through and everything you do will have that added bit of sex appeal.

This also means that, should it boost your sexual confidence more, you can absolutely disregard every single rule we’ve set in this article. Yup, that’s right – how you view yourself is more important than any single bit of advice we can give you. So, find your own style and own it 100%, the rest will come by virtue of being true to yourself, which is the most empowering and sexually confident thing you can do.
