Bondage in the bedroom: 3 techniques explained

By Sabine, 08.02.2021

Surrendering yourself to your partner completely or taking total control? Bondage is a sexual game that excites lots of people. Either you take control (as dom), or you give it away (being sub) and surrender all. Are you curious about the infamous world of the B in BDSM? We’ll explain three different approaches.

What is bondage?

Bondage is a sexual activity where people tie each other up. It is part of BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Submission, Sadism and Masochism). Bondage lovers are hugely aroused by the feeling of helplessness and let themselves completely go during the fantasy. The person who knows the ropes, and controls them, gets a kick out of having total control and the trust of the submissive. There are different ways to approach bondage, different techniques to use that we will explain.

Before you start

It is very important to discuss all your wishes (and doubts) with the person you are taking this adventure with before you dive into it. Be open to their fantasies, try not to judge: what arouses them the most? What would you like to try and what is an absolute no for you. Which boundaries can be crossed and which boundaries can’t. Decide on a stopword: a word you can use to stop the action immediately. It will keep yourself and your partner safe.

Shibari

A famous bondage technique is the Japanese shibari technique. Rope is used in both an erotic and an artistic way. A lot of time is spent on the tying up, it’s a very patient process. The rope is tied in a way that it stimulates erogenous zones all over the body. You will only need one rope in this technique, with the length of 20 to 25 feet. Shibaru is about the art of tying someone up, but the erotic part is important and taking away freedom of movement too.

Cuffs

And you can use cuffs. Like handcuffs, hangcuffs, ankle cuffs or a spreader bar. Handcuffs and ankle cuffs are more or less the same, use them to tie up hands and ankles. Hang cuffs can be used on your door for example, to hang the sub. A spreader bar is a rod that has cuffs on each end. It helps to spread the legs during the bondage play. We recommend using soft material cuffs, to prevent them from cutting into your skin.

Hogtie

Hogtie is an erotic but very intense technique. In this technique a person will lie on their stomach and get their hands and feet bound in this state. Usually with rope. There are different hogtie toys you can use. You can for example tease your sub with vibrating toys while they are tied up. You can also use a blindfold to add an exciting element. Make it even more exciting!
