Sexuality and aging: what changes?

By Janna, 15.08.2024

We all have to deal with it: growing older and the impact this has on our sexuality. Yes, our body changes over the years, but this doesn’t mean your sex life should come to a halt. On the contrary! It may even become better with age. Let’s have a look at what you can expect and how to maintain your sexual health while growing older.

Physical changes

For women:

  • Hormonal changes: during and after menopause the production of estrogen decreases, which may lead to vaginal dryness and thinning of vaginal tissue. This can make sex uncomfortable, but luckily there are various solutions, such as lubricants and hormonal treatments.
  • Changes in libido: your libido can fluctuate due to hormonal fluctuations, stress or other health problems. This is normal and there are ways to get your libido back on track.

For men:

  • Erectile dysfunction: it may take longer to get and keep an erection. This may be caused by reduced testosterone levels, blood circulation problems or other health issues.
  • Changes in ejaculation: the force and quantity of ejaculate may decrease, and it can take longer to get sexually aroused again after an orgasm.

Emotional and psychological changes

  • Self-confidence and body satisfaction: as we age, we may become more critical about our body. Our insecurities may impact our sex life. But attractiveness is not just physical; self-confidence plays a crucial role.
  • Changes in relationships: you may experience boredom or routine in a long-term relationship. It’s important to keep communicating with your partner about your needs and fantasies. Exploring new things together may re-ignite the flame.

How to improve your sex life as you get older

  • Keep communicating: talk with your partner about what you do and don’t like. Open communication is the key to a satisfying sex life, regardless of age.
  • Try new things: this is the perfect time to explore new sexual activities. From toys to new positions, don’t be afraid to experiment.
  • Take care of your health: stay physically active, eat healthy and make sure you get enough sleep. A good general health can have a positive effect on your sexual health.
  • Visit a specialist: if you experience sexual problems, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor or sex therapist. There are various treatments and therapies available that can be helpful.
  • Use aids: lubricants can work miracles with vaginal dryness, and there are numerous medicines and appliances in case of erectile dysfunctions. Don’t be ashamed to use these aids.
  • Physical intimacy: sex does not only revolve around penetration. Cuddling, kissing and caressing are also important aspects of physical intimacy which can strengthen your bond.

Sexuality and aging do not have to be opposites. Yes, there will be changes, but with an open mind and the right approach your sex life can still be satisfying and enjoyable. Keep talking, keep trying and don’t forget to have fun together (and alone). Age is only a number, after all, and passion knows no bounds.
