In a musuem in Turin you can find the most mysterious and controversial papyrus roles from the old Egypt: ‘The pictures represent monstrous unfortunate situations which represent a distinctive view of the wisdom from the Egyptians’, according to the Egyptologist Jean-Francois Champollion in a letter from 1824.

Papyrus 55001, which is the official name of the erotic document. Men with gigantic penises took there women in various positions. Numerous sex scenes have been figured on the almost 3.000 years old papyrus roll.  

Sex was part of life for the Egyptians, in this world as well as after dead and in the Kingdom of the Gods. The Egyptian genesis says that the sexual lust from the goddess Atum was stimulated by love goddess Hathor who swings herself around the sun. Atum was so aroused by this that he started to masturbate himself. He swallowed his own seed and spit two kids: Sjoe and Tefnoet. Together they build the universe.  

The fact that sex was already very popular in the Gods Kingdom, the Egyptians felt themselves free to have sex with whoever they wanted. There weren’t even laws against sex within or outside the marriage. As long as the woman was loyal to her husband and promised that the kids were his, the husband could have sex with the maid or slave. He did have to have sex only, because when the sex turned into an affair, both could be punished.

Some Egyptologists saw this kind of erotic as satire. The appearance of the men with gigantic penises, bizarre positions and the jokes illustrating the pictures are so surrealistic and sometimes with a humor. ‘You cannot satisfy me so I have to use this’, says one of the pictures which illustrates a woman who squats above an enormous jug.

You can see this papyrus roll as the oldest porn magazine of the world or as an attempt to trick the elite. We see it as a revelation: In the old days people loved sex too!
