10 things you didn’t know about porn

1. The internet is filled with it 

There are over 26 million pornsites, that means 12% of the whole internet. Porn also stars in the top four search requests and 35% of all downloads are…porn.

2. The oldest pornfilm was made in 1896, just a year after the invention of film

The French erotic film Le Coucher de la Mariée  was one of the first porn flicks. The duration of the film was seven minutes, only two minutes were preserved. In those minutes we can watch the main character, Louise Willy, undressing herself. 

3. The word ‘ pornography’ is Greek

Derived from the Greek porni (“prostitute”) and graphein (“to write”).  Technically the word pornography is to ‘write about prostitutes’, art depicting life of the prostitutes. 

4. Porn makes the hotel business big bucks

Around 50% (yes, half!) of the hotel guests orders porn. Research done by hotelchains Hilton, Marriot, Hyatt, Sheraton and the Holiday Inn showed 70% of the roomservice earnings coming from porn rental. In some countries where these films are illegal, the hotels are exempt from these laws to tend to the ‘needs’ of their foreign guests. 

5. Porn users favorite search word is ‘Japanese’

In 2019 the most popular search word on Pornhub was ‘Japanese,’ followed by‘hentai,’ ‘lesbian,’ ‘milf’ and ‘Korean.’ The site gets around 11,5 million visitors a day. 

6. Watching porn is bad for your memory

In a study by the Universität Duisburg-Essen (2012) 28 male subjects were shown several images and were asked to indicate if they had seen these images before. Remembering went a lot worse when erotic images were involved, compared to‘normal’ images. 

7. Watching porn is bad for your memory. No just kidding: Watching porn together is good for your relationship (and we would never joke about that)

Several studies found that couples who watch porn together are sexually more involved than with couples of which only one of them watched porn. 

8. The university of Montreal had to cancel a study because they couldn’t find any men in their twenties NOT watching porn

Professor Simon Louis Lajeuness wanted to measure the impact of watching porn on the sexuality of men, men who didn’t watch porn that is. But it was impossible for him to find men who didn’t watch porn!  He had to reorient his studie to behaviourism of pornusers.

9. We can’t even see all the details

Research done in 2012 by the Rijksuniversiteit of Groningen shows that the part of the brain that processes information gets a lower blood flow when watching porn. A lot of details are lost because of it. The blood goes to all the parts of the brain that are responsible for sexual excitement. The brain knows how to prioritize. 

10. The average porn career lasts three years

The average career or a female performer in porn lasts three years. Men quit the job after four years.
